Drawings from Rashomon

Films bring some extra drama to life during lockdown and I’ve been revisiting Kurosawa’s films which I first discovered when studying Chinese at Cambridge. I love the cinematography of Rashomon and the influence, it seems to me, of Kabuki and Noh theatre and the drama of black and white and woodland setting.

I remember being so excited by the Seven Samurai when I first saw it and am really enjoying seeing it again. Sometimes I get so absorbed I forget to pause it to draw.

The rape of a bride and the murder of her samurai husband are recalled from the perspectives of a bandit, the bride, the samurai’s ghost and a woodcutter.
